“Already two months had passed since I decided to start this adventure known as EVS, in Nea Moudania, Greece, through Casa da Juventude de Amarante.

Since I arrived I am volunteering in 5 different places. I came here without knowing what to expect, only with the will to make a difference and the desire to travel and get to know new cultures. And with the confidence that I my destination is an amazing place.

I have to say that in the end I do not regret my decision even for a moment. I was extremely well welcomed by the people from the hosting organization You in Europe who treat me as if I am a member of their family. I live in a house with perfect conditions which we share with the other volunteer – Carlos from Spain. The locals are friendly, the town is small but has its charm and the food here makes the mouth water. I wouldn’t change this experience for anything else!

We also have a partnership with the local cultural center where we are now working on a new website, we are taking care of the theater wardrobe and we are organizing an archive with photos. Last week we designed a poster to promote the Sardinha Festival of Nea Moudania which will happen in a few days from now.

Among our volunteering activities is the local primary school which we visit at least two times a week in order to help in the after-class activities and organize our own activities. Only a couple of weeks ago we were painting the flags of the world on a big sheet that served as decoration for a theatre play played by the kids.

During the week we also volunteer in the sports school, we suggest different games and activities for the kids and support the sport disciplines in the school.

Besides this we do volunteering in a center for people with disabilities, f.ex. we participate in the greek dance classes.

And finally we also have tasks within our hosting organization You in Europe. Every morning we have meetings in the office and until know we have been part of various projects.

On my first day here we cleaned the beaches of Nea Moudania, we helped in the office work of the organization and in the management of new projects. In the end of May we took part in an Youth Exchange and we were not only responsible for it but also we proposed and developed our own ideas.

In those last days I developed many new skills:

I learned and practices circus arts.

And on top of everything else I made friendships with people from different cultures and learned a bit from every language that came on my way.

Although I am feeling comfortable in the volunteering work, of course not everything can be only focused on work. During my free time I used every minute to explore Greece and its neighbouring countries and to spend quality time with the people we encountered.

Because I believe this is a part of EVS also: not only what we do for the local community, but also taking advantage of the opportunities that pop up in between.”
