In our second reportage we will show you how hard the EVS volunteers worked during the summer: many projects, a crowd of people joining us for a week or two and a lot of things to do. The keyword is flexibility: we volunteers can, in only one day, teach Portuguese, show Amarante to visitors, organize various activities and cook.

Youth Exchange “MOUNTAINS: Facing Fears” (United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Italy, Portugal France, Greece); 21-29 June

With the Mountains project we discussed on the topic of refugees. Who are these people? And what can we do for them? What is the first step towards a real change? The Forum theater performace on the topic where Nikos participated was a great success. There were also beautiful moments of nature discovery, like visits to the lake with waterfalls and also “Andar a comer”, walk of 10 km in Amarante.

Work camp “Stage on the Street” (France, Russia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Italy, Denmark, Mexico) 4-15 July

Then was the moment of Festa Amarantina (8 July), a street fest in which our volunteers took part with the help of the Work Camp participants, supervised by CJ’s ex-EVS volunteers Adam and Eugen. The topic of the party was love in all its forms and the defense of diversity as wealth for the humanity. The parade in the street with the wedding of Aurora and Sylvio, interpreted by our Lazar and Sylvia, was amazing. In the upside down museum Andrea and Dodo were living statues, Marta took funny pictures and there were the optical illusions on the walls. People of Amarante attented at the party with joy.
Immediately after the Festa Amarantina we focused on the preparation of Teatro de Rua/Theatre on the Street, an amazing experience. With the guys from the Work Camp we helped Amarante’s center for people with disabilities to set up their show, building all the stage sets with our hands. During the evening, we volunteers performed a choreography created by Gosia and Marta, accompanied by David Guetta’s song “I gotta feeling”.

During July we organized different activities for the kids of Amarante, as part of Clube de Ferias/Vacation’s Club. We built horses from straw, buttons and colored strings. We took funny photos, practiced yoga and meditation, played in the garden, played bombos and learned everything a lot about Europe.
